In 2023, the Detroit land-based casinos found their most significant source of revenue in slot machines, contributing to a staggering $984.1 million in aggregate revenue.
This figure marked a slight increase from the previous year, which stood at $983.7 million.
However, table games revenue took a hit, declining by 12.7% to $238.7 million, while retail sports betting’s adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) also fell by 25.7%, reaching $14.0 million.
Slot machines continued to dominate Detroit’s casino landscape, making up 80.0% of the total revenue for 2023, with table games accounting for 19.0% and sports betting lagging behind at just over 1.0%.
Among the casinos, MGM Grand Detroit remained the undisputed leader, claiming a 46.0% market share.
Despite a 6.0% decrease in combined slots and table games revenue, MGM generated $564.0 million and reported $2.3 million in sports betting QAGR.
MotorCity Detroit secured the second spot with a 31.0% share, experiencing a 5.8% drop in revenue to $373.6 million and $5.0 million in sports betting QAGR.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown rounded off the market with a 23.0% share.
Their revenue from slots and table games increased to $285.2 million, and sports wagering QAGR amounted to $5.0 million.
In total, the three Detroit casinos contributed $99.0 million in wagering taxes for slots and table games, with an additional $528,314 paid in wagering taxes for retail sports betting.
December brought a 5.7% increase in total market revenue, reaching $116.2 million.
Table and slots revenue grew by 2.9% year-on-year to $111.4 million, significantly outpacing November’s $76.0 million by 46.6%.
Sports betting QAGR soared by 200.0%, climbing from $1.6 million in December 2022 to $4.8 million, which was also 54.8% more than the $3.1 million recorded in November.
Detroit residents and visitors bet a total of $30.4 million on sports at retail facilities during the month.
MGM continued its strong presence in December with a 44.0% market share, MotorCity followed with 32.0%, and Hollywood Casino held a 24.0% share.
MGM reported a slight decrease in slots and table games revenue by 0.7%, totaling $50.6 million, while sports betting QAGR reached $291,171.
MotorCity witnessed a 5.1% increase in slots and table games revenue, reaching $34.7 million, and also posted $2.3 million in sports betting QAGR.
Hollywood Casino experienced a 7.5% rise in slots and table games revenue, reaching $26.1 million, and recorded $2.2 million in sports betting QAGR.
During December, the three Detroit casinos collectively paid $9.0 million in gaming taxes to the state and reported $13.8 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit.
Additionally, $180,822 was paid in gaming taxes to the state related to sports betting, along with $221,005 in wagering taxes submitted to the City of Detroit based on sports betting revenue.
