Mark Hughes has been appointed as the new head of security for the National Lottery, as the transition to Allwyn taking over the operation of the National Lottery on February 1, 2024, draws near.
Hughes, who has served as Chief Information Security Officer at Smart DCC since September 2022, will also become a part of Allwyn’s executive leadership team.
Before joining Smart DCC, Hughes had a remarkable 16-year career at Vodafone, predominantly as the UK Chief Information Security Officer.
His expertise in security also includes roles at Borders and House of Fraser. Hughes expressed his excitement about this new opportunity, stating, “I’m thrilled to be joining Allwyn and being part of the next chapter in the journey of the National Lottery.
Working for an organization that literally makes dreams come true and contributes to good causes is a huge privilege, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Allwyn’s UK CEO, Andria Vidler, welcomed Hughes, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the National Lottery’s security, especially as Allwyn embarks on ambitious plans for its digital transformation.
Vidler stated, “Preserving the security of The National Lottery at all times is of critical importance, including as we roll out our ambitious plans for the transformation of The National Lottery so that it becomes more modern, digital, and engaging for players.”
Hughes joins Allwyn just six weeks ahead of its takeover of the UK National Lottery, following a competitive bidding process.
Allwyn secured the fourth National Lottery license, defeating competitors such as The New Lottery Company and Italy’s Sisal, as well as the incumbent, Camelot.
Camelot, which had held the previous license since the National Lottery’s launch in 1994, challenged the Gambling Commission’s decision to select Allwyn in court.
The High Court initially suspended the licensing choice, but Camelot later withdrew its challenge due to concerns about the potential impact on funds for good causes.
While Allwyn will replace Camelot as the National Lottery operator, the latter still maintains ties to the lottery through acquisition deals.
Allwyn acquired Camelot UK and Camelot Lottery Solutions Group earlier in 2023, leading to a significant improvement in its financial performance in Q3, with consolidated total revenue rising by 98% to €2.01 billion.
Overall, Allwyn’s strong financial performance in Q3, with consolidated gross gaming revenue reaching €1.92 billion, underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing the National Lottery’s future and supporting good causes.
In the nine months leading up to September 30, 2023, total revenue reached €5.70 billion, marking a substantial 98% increase from the previous year.
