Light & Wonder’s CEO Dylan Slaney Steers iGaming Through Industry Evolution and Innovation

Dylan Slaney, CEO of Light & Wonder, reminisces about his entry into the gaming industry in October 2017, a period he describes as a fast-moving whirlwind.

Since then, he has been on an impressive trajectory, climbing the ranks from executive vice-president of gaming at NYX Gaming Group to senior vice-president of gaming at SG Digital after Scientific Games acquired NYX.

Light & Wonder emerged from Scientific Games’ restructuring, focusing on three divisions: land-based, social casino arm SciPlay, and iGaming, led by Slaney.

He takes pride in his role, emphasizing the privilege it is to lead the iGaming business.

The iGaming landscape has significantly evolved since Slaney’s entry in 2017. Regulatory changes have transformed once-off-limits markets like the US and Brazil into major growth opportunities.

Adhering to these regulations adds complexity but also enhances player protection.

Slaney advocates for balanced regulation, emphasizing that overly stringent rules can drive players towards unregulated markets.

Light & Wonder actively participates in shaping the UK gambling market, collaborating with the Gambling Commission on an industry code for product design.

In response to evolving player expectations, Slaney predicts that player engagement through additional features will be a major trend in the coming years.

Multiplayer options, personalization, and unique rewards are expected to become essential components of the iGaming experience.

Content remains crucial, and Light & Wonder’s acquisition of ELK Studios has been successful, thanks to innovative mechanics like the CollectR payout. Strong content combined with new mechanics fuels player engagement.

As CEO of Light & Wonder iGaming, Slaney aims to drive growth in the online division, which has been the fastest-growing segment, with a 21% increase in Q3 revenue.

Distribution deals and unique content partnerships, like the Squid Game slot, contribute to their success.

Despite challenges and competition, Slaney embraces every setback as an opportunity to learn and grow, a principle instilled in him by his upbringing.

He emphasizes the importance of accountability and hard work in achieving success.

Slaney’s personal drive and values resonate within Light & Wonder iGaming, where a “never settle” attitude prevails.

In the fast-paced and ever-changing gambling industry, Slaney’s approach is a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and adaptability.

He encourages others to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with the industry’s constant evolution.
