Athens on a European night is rarely comfortable for visitors, but AEK are in no shape to frighten anybody. They sit 29th in the Champions League table with three points from three games: a win over LASK, then defeats to Shakhtar and Manchester City. Real Madrid arrive at the Allwyn Arena on Wednesday night (kick-off 17:45 UTC) with a fourth straight win in their sights.
Jose Mourinho’s side have been winning in all sorts of ways. Inter were beaten 2-1 at the Bernabéu, Roma 4-3 on the road, and Leipzig 4-1 at home. Kylian Mbappé is scoring freely, Arda Güler is supplying the creativity behind him, and Vinicius Jr is expected back in the side after a flat spell. Thibaut Courtois kept a clean sheet on his return from illness, which will settle a back line that has not always looked secure.
The case against a big margin is worth stating. Two of Real’s three European wins this season were by a single goal, and the Roma game was anything but controlled. They have also slipped in La Liga, losing at Atletico and Villarreal before the 4-1 win over Sevilla. A two-goal cushion is never guaranteed, even against opponents at the foot of the table.
Still, AEK’s situation points the other way. They are shipping goals, short on confidence, and leaning heavily on Aleksandar Jovic for their threat. The probable home XI is Brignoli; Rota, Moukoudi, Relvas, Pilios; Arriaga, Majer, Marin; Mario, Jovic, Varga. That is a side that will have to chase the game if Real score first, and chasing against Mbappé and Vinicius is how a respectable 1-0 turns into a 3-0.
The market agrees on the broad picture. Real Madrid are priced at roughly a 77% chance of winning, which makes a two-goal margin a sensible step rather than a leap of faith. Preview sites have mostly landed on a 1-3 away win, while others go as high as 0-5. A 1-3 would cover the handicap with a goal to spare, and it allows for AEK nicking one at the other end, which their open style makes plausible.
Best bet: Real Madrid -1.5 Asian handicap at 1.65
With no draw or half-stake outcome on a -1.5 line, Real need to win by two or more. One-goal wins and anything else lose the stake, so the price matters. Anything near evens or better is fair given how likely a Real win is.
Alternatives
Real Madrid to win and both teams to score is 2.25 at several books. It covers the scenario where AEK get one back and Real still win comfortably, but it loses if the hosts are shut out, so it is not the safer route.
Over 3.5 goals is 1.75 at some bookmakers and 1.87 at others. Real’s recent European games have been high-scoring, and AEK’s matches have regularly gone past the line, so there is a decent case for it.
Prediction: AEK Athens 1-4 Real Madrid.
