    Detroit Casinos See Revenue Downturn, Sports Betting Slumps in January 2024

    The latest figures reveal a notable downturn, with a decrease of 8.8% from January 2023.

    The total revenue amassed amounted to $93.9m from table games and slots, while a lesser sum of $500,221 was attributed to retail sports betting.

    Overall revenue took a dive compared to the previous month, dropping by 18.8% as per Detroit’s December report.

    In terms of market dominance, MGM secured 48% of the share in January, with MotorCity claiming 30%, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown holding 22%.

    When focusing on revenue from table games and slots, there was a decline of 9.1% from January 2023 and a more substantial drop of 15.7% from December 2023.

    Year-on-year comparisons showcased a decrease in gaming revenue across Detroit’s casinos. MGM saw an 11.3% decline from January 2023, while MotorCity experienced a 10.4% dip, amounting to $27.1m.

    Hollywood Casino at Greektown recorded a 2.0% decrease, tallying $22.2m.

    Similar trends persisted in the month-on-month comparisons, with MGM experiencing an 11.8% decrease, MotorCity facing a 21.9% downturn, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown witnessing a 14.9% fall.

    During January 2024, the casinos contributed $7.6m in taxes to Michigan state, down from $8.4m in January 2023 – a decrease of 9.5%.

    Additionally, they paid $11.2m in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit.

    Sports betting activity saw a decline in January, with total retail handle amounting to $24.2m – a decrease of 20.4%. Gross receipts for January reached $520,988.

    Although there was an increase of $389,197 in year-on-year retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR), there was a notable decline of $4.3m compared to December 2023.

    MotorCity led in QAGR with $1.1m, followed by MGM with $403,926.

    Conversely, Hollywood Casino at Greektown recorded a negative total of $1m.

    In terms of taxes, the casinos paid $58,073 to Michigan state, a significant increase from January 2023.

    They also contributed $70,978 in wagering taxes to the City of Detroit.

    The January report highlighted that fantasy contest operators reported adjusted revenues of $484,140 in December 2023 and paid $40,668 in taxes.
