Oregon Sports Betting Hits Record Highs with $74.3 Million Handle in December 2023

In December, Oregon’s sports betting scene shattered previous records, with a remarkable handle of $74.3 million.

This surge eclipsed the previous high of $71.9 million set just two months earlier in October 2023.

Compared to December 2022, when $53.8 million was wagered, this figure was a substantial 38.1% increase, underscoring the growing popularity of sports betting in the state.

The sport that drew the most attention from bettors was American football, with a staggering $23.1 million in wagers.

Basketball followed closely behind, accounting for $16.5 million in bets, while football and ice hockey generated $3.3 million and $2.0 million in bets, respectively.

Breaking down the types of bets, single bets dominated, with a total of $48.1 million in wagers, while parlay bets accounted for the remaining $25.1 million.

In terms of gross gaming revenue, December also witnessed a record-breaking performance, with $9.7 million in earnings.

This achievement exceeded the previous record of $8.5 million set in October 2023 by a notable 14.1%.

Furthermore, it marked a substantial 70.2% increase from December 2022 when the revenue was $5.7 million.

Analyzing the revenue sources, American football led the way with $3.5 million, followed by basketball with $2.9 million, and football with $605,891.

Parlay bets generated a significant $5.7 million in revenue, while single wagers contributed $4.0 million to the total.

Notably, all sports betting activities in Oregon are facilitated exclusively through DraftKings, the sole sports betting operator in the state.

DraftKings took over from the Oregon Lottery’s Scoreboard online sportsbook in January 2022, marking the culmination of the latter’s phase-out process in the same year.

This transition was unanimously approved by the Oregon Lottery Commission in August 2021, facilitated by DraftKings’ acquisition of SBTech, a move agreed upon in December 2019.

The Oregon Lottery initially launched its Scoreboard platform in October 2019 when the state officially entered the legal sports betting market.

Since then, DraftKings has continued to dominate the scene, with no other legal alternatives available for bettors in the state.
